Latvians love to get together to eat, drink and sing.

Traditional Latvian food is hearty, but simple, borrowing from Swedish, German and Russian cuisine. The dishes are fairly bland, and use mainly dill, caraway and onions to add flavour.

Dairy products such as butter, cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, kefir and yoghurt, and cereals are important, especially rye, oats and barley. Baked goods made of bleached wheat flour were confined to special occasions.

Savoury piragi and mildly sweet, saffron-flavoured klingeris are two of my favourite party foods.
